Community Waste Management |
|
|
July, 2010
With the purpose of keeping the streets
of Gyaneswor clean from waste generated by local shops, WATO
distributed 14 waste collection boxes to local shops in the
area.
Normally, the waste such as: cigarette buds, juice cans, wrapping papers, food remains are thrown irresponsibly in the
streets by the shopkeepers as well as the shoppers which gives a very untidy and ugly community image.
This pilot project is, therefore, launched with the aim to help develop awareness among them to responsibly throw
the garbage into these green boxes placed next to every shops alongside the street.
|
"One Rupee per day" is contributed by each shop participating in this
program, and the collected money is utilized in hiring a dedicated waste
collector who is responsible for collecting the waste on a daily basis.
This has already become a combined community effort - Mr. Ganesh, a local
shopkeeper, has already taken up responsibility of collecting the money from
each shop and handing it over to the waste collector monthly. Shopkeepers feel
part of the program, as they have seen how their responsible habits have in turn
helped their own shops premises look cleaner and tidy.
WATO has further plans to expand this community led waste management program in
other areas of the community.
